How to crochet a winter hat for your locs

I'm a long-time crochet-fanatic, and I've made this hat for my kids, myself, and for friends with dreads or otherwise "large" natural hairdos.

 

When I first learned that crochet has come to be one of the methods of locking hair, I was thrilled. I thought it was SO adorable to see a video where someone was crocheting another person's hair while that person was crocheting a blanket.

Two of my passions all rolled into one!

If you are looking for a project for yourself, or you want to get someone you know who can crochet to make a hat for you, here you go:

NADIA'S NOTES:

-You will be working in continuous rounds, no slip stitching or chaining up after each round.

-Some crocheters have mentioned that this hat turned out a little smaller for them. Maybe going up a hook size or decrease to Round 23 or 24 and then jump to the instructions for Rounds 26-29.

Ch: chain |  St: Stitch |  Sl st: slip stitch | HDC: half double crochet | BLO: Back Loop Only 
HDC2TOG: Half Double Crochet Decrease: Yarn over, go into the next st, yarn over, pull through, go directly into the next stitch, yarn over, pull through (You should have 4 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. HDC Decrease made.

• Rnd 1: HDC 6 in 2nd ch from hook. (6)
• Rnd 2: HDC 2 in each st. (12)
• Rnd 3: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next st) 6 times. (18)
• Rnd 4: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 2 sts) 6 times. (24)
• Rnd 5: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 3 sts) 6 times. (30)
• Rnd 6: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 4 sts) 6 times. (36)
• Rnd 7: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 5 sts) 6 times. (42)
• Rnd 8: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 6 sts) 6 times. (48)
